FAQ

What size garden will I need?

It depends on your preferences and family size. Typically a 20 x 20 sq. ft. area will feed a family of four (4) while a 12 x 12 sq. ft. plot is perfect for a couple and if herbs are your fancy a 4 x 4 sq. ft. bed is just about right.

Because your garden is unique, we begin with a ‘no charge’, ‘no obligation’ site assessment, working with you to choose the best size, configuration and location for your garden.

Do you use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides of any kind?

No. Never. Home Harvest concentrates on building and maintaining balanced, compost rich organic soils. Synthetic additives and treatments are neither desired nor required in a home herb and vegetable garden.

How much sunlight does a garden need?

Between 6 -8 hours of sunlight is required for a fully productive garden. Morning sunlight is preferred as this helps dry moisture from plant surfaces reducing the likelihood of disease.

Where overhanging trees may block sunlight to an otherwise preferred site, Home Harvest can recommend a certified Arborist.

Do I need an irrigation system?

A regular and reliable watering is a must for a healthy garden. This can be as simple as your garden hose or a rain barrel collecting water from your eaves trough downspouts. Home Harvest can also install inexpensive drip irrigation systems with automatic timers.

What about pest control?

Our experience has taught us that troublesome pest outbreaks are rare in a balanced and well maintained garden. We employ preventative practices and methods, such as mulching, companion planting and crop rotation to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. When control is required we do it safely and naturally.

What geographic area do you service?

Home Harvest serves all of Halifax Regional Municipality.
